OUTREACH EDUCATION

Airborne Critical Care, LLC is very involved with education. Not only do we believe it is the foundation of our flight program but feel we have a responsibility to help with the education of healthcare providers within our community. ACC is licensed and regulated by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Airborne Critical Care, LLC is also involved with outreach education. ACC can assist with providing the following training:

  • First Responder
  • BLS – Basic Life Support
  • ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • PALS – Pediatric Advance Life Support
  • NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation Program (aka NALS)
  • PHTLS – Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support
  • AMLS – Advance Medical Life Support
  • RSI Training – Rapid Sequence Intubation
  • Hemodynamic Monitoring
  • Respiratory Care for the Critical Care Transport Clinician
  • Mechanical Ventilation

Respiratory Care for the Critical Care Transport Clinician is a 24 hour 1300 slide plus classroom lecture / lab program developed to familiarize the non respiratory practitioner with critical respiratory care to include airway management and ventilatory management. This course was developed and has been taught nationally for several years by our vice president. The program covers Pulmonary Anatomy and Physiology Review, Pathophysilogy, In-depth Physical Exam, Acid-Base, Chest Radiography Interpretation, Basic and Advanced Airway Management to include RSI, Retrograde Intubation, and Surgical Intubation. It further covers Mechanical Ventilation, Management of Ventilation, and Technical Adjuncts such as Capnography, Arterial Puncture and Line Insertion, Hemodynamic Effects of Positive Pressure Ventilation, Thoracic drainage Management to include Chest Tube Insertion and Management, and lastly Respiratory Care Pharmacology.

ACC is also helping bring the Cleveland Clinic’s Certified Intensive Care Provider (CICP) Program to North Carolina. The CICP program and it’s sister program the Military Intensive Care Provider (MICP) program, are a joint venture between the Cleveland Clinic Health System-Western Region, serving as the host site, the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS), and it’s site license holders.

The CICP program was established to provide Paramedics, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists / Practitioners, and other medical professionals, with the educational opportunity to advance their knowledge, and understanding, of patient care, and procedures, to the advanced level.

While the CICP program is specifically designed as an advanced medical program for in-hospital patient care, a secondary component addresses high acuity patient care in the ground, and air, critical care transport setting.

Long-Term Goals

The long-term goal is to establish a national standard of education, and training, for Paramedics in the critical care profession, and nurses, respiratory practitioners, and military medical professionals during transport.

CICP Pre-course
The CICP pre-course is an on-line based program that is designed for students with various levels of experience to build their knowledge base in preparation for the CICP Didactic (lecture/lab) component of the program.

The textbook, “Guidelines for Air Medical Crew Education”, published by the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS), is utilized for the CICP Pre-course. Each chapter is authored by medical professionals that are recognized as leaders in medicine.
We utilize the Blackboard Learning System so that students are able to track their study progress by taking a short quiz after each chapter. The quiz is immediately graded, and the student is provided with feedback as to their level of understanding of the material.

CICP Didactic (lecture / lab)
The CICP Didactic component is composed of >100 hours of lectures, and labs, that begins where the CICP Pre-course left off. Medical professionals recognized as leaders in critical care present advanced level education, written specifically for the CICP program.
The addition of hands-on labs to several of the lectures provides the ultimate learning experience. By providing labs with the advanced lectures, students are immediately able to practice the newly acquired information to reinforce the skill.

Topics include:

  • Family and Community Interface
  • Mission Safety
  • System Development
  • Air Transport Considerations
  • Medical Conditions
  • Traumatic Injuries
  • Obstetrics, Neonatal, and Pediatrics
  • High Risk and Critical Care Patients

CICP Clinical Experience
Students will get first hand experience in their newly acquired knowledge, and skills, during their exposure to high acuity patient care during their clinical rotations at various sites throughout the Cleveland Clinic Health System, or in your area. Various Intensive Care Units, Level II Trauma Center, and Critical Care Transport service will provide the true experience, and the setting to begin to tie everything together.

Certified Flight Paramedic Examination

  • Written Exam.

All Paramedic students completing the requirements of the CICP program will sit for the Certified Flight Paramedic (FP-C) examination.

  • Skills Exam.

In addition to a written examination, students will be evaluated on skills also. Utilizing the National Registry format, students must demonstrate competency in a variety of advanced level skills.
