FLIGHT TEAMS

Airborn Critical Care, Medical Air TransportAirborne Critical Care, LLC provides the highest level of care found in the air ambulance industry. ACC’s flight teams are comprised of specially trained Flight Nurses and Flight Respiratory Practitioners. Our Medical Director, Carol Young, MD, FCCP leads the teams. Dr. Young is a Board Certified Critical Care Physician who also holds board certifications in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. Either Dr. Young or one of our Assistant Medical Directors who are also Board Certified Critical Care Physicians, provide 24 hour per day Medical Control / Direction for our Air Ambulances. Whenever needed, they are assessable to our flight teams for consultation by satellite phone from anywhere in the world. They are also available for consultation regarding the patient and transport to the referring and/or receiving physicians.

Airborne Critical Care LLC’s Flight Nurses are specially trained for Air Ambulance operations. They come to ACC with a minimum of three years Critical Care experience. In addition to the ICU many also have Emergency Department and / or Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) experience as Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics. All of ACC’s Flight Nurses are required to be registered and licensed by the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Airborne Critical Care, Medical Air TransportAirborne Critical Care LLC’s Flight Respiratory Practitioners are also specially trained for air ambulance operations. They all have a minimum of three years Critical Care and Emergency Medicine experience. ACC’s FRPs are registered by the National Board of Respiratory Care as Registered Respiratory Therapists and licensed by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board as Advanced Practice Respiratory Practitioners. Most of our FRPs also have experience in 911 Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as Emergency Medical Technicians or Paramedics. Some also hold the University of Maryland – Baltimore County’s Critical Care Paramedic certification as well.

Both our Flight Nurses and Flight Respiratory Practitioners are required to maintain certification in the following courses or specialties:
Basic Cardiac Life Support
Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Advanced Medical Life support
Pediatric Advanced Life Support
Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support and/or Basic Trauma Life Support
Neonatal Resuscitation Program

Many hold certifications in the following as well:
Advanced Trauma Life Support
Advanced Pediatric Life Support
Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics
Advanced Burn Life Support

 

Our teams also go through the Cleveland Clinic’s 160 plus hour training course called the “Certified Intensive Care Program”. When they graduate they are issued the credential of CICP or “Certified Intensive Care Provider”. Furthermore our personnel go through intensive on site training to provide advanced skills. This training is maintained through weekly continuing education taught at our corporate headquarters.

Our Medical Director reviews all flights for any problems and/or outstanding care. Any issues found are addressed immediately with the clinicians involved. If further action is required then the Airborne Critical Care, LLC Audit Review Committee is notified. The Audit Review Committee is comprised of physicians, nurses, and elected officials from the local county government, community, and/or hospital. They meet quarterly to review all patient care issues whether good or bad and to make recommendations toward improving the care provided by our air ambulance Flight Teams.
